
Why Your Recessed Infrared Heaters Actually Fail (And How We Fixed It)
If you’ve ever dealt with recessed ceiling heaters, you know they’re basically heat traps. They live in tight spots where the temperature spikes fast. Most of the time, when these things die, it happens at the exact spot where the lead wire meets the heating element. It’s the weakest link. If that seal gives way, oxygen sneaks in, the tungsten filament starts to oxidize, and the wire insulation just… burns.
The “Breathing” Problem
Here’s the thing: most heaters on the market use basic adhesives. They’re cheap, but they dry out after a few dozen heat-and-cool cycles. Once a tiny crack forms, the heater starts “breathing.” Air gets sucked in and pushed out every time the unit switches on and off. It’s a slow death for the electrical insulation. Eventually, the wires arc, and you’ve got a short circuit on your hands. Not exactly what you want in a ceiling. We decided to stop playing that game. Instead of glue, we use high-temp glass-to-metal seals or ceramic potting. It creates a total barrier. The halogen gas stays put, the oxygen stays out, and the heater actually lasts.
Real Craftsmanship vs. Just “Putting it Together”
A lot of assembly lines rely on shrink-wrap or low-temp silicone. In a recessed ceiling, that stuff just can’t take the beating. It gets brittle and snaps. We spec our lead-outs to handle constant heat over 250°C without flinching. We also use silver-plated copper leads. Why? Because it cuts down on contact resistance. If the connection point gets too hot, it ruins the seal, which then lets in air, which then kills the wire. It’s a nasty loop. Silver plating breaks that cycle.
One Quick Warning for the Installers
There is a trade-off. Because this sealing is so heavy-duty, the lead wires are a bit stiffer. Don’t kink them. If you bend the wire too sharply right at the seal during installation, you might crack the ceramic potting. Just give the wires a bit of breathing room—maintain a gentle curve—and you’re golden. A little care during the install means you won’t be climbing a ladder to replace a burnt-out unit six months from now.
