
Stop Replacing Your SIG Blomax Tubes Every Other Week
If you’re constantly swapping out quartz tubes on your SIG Blomax line, you know the frustration. It feels like as soon as you get the line dialed in, something snaps. Most people assume it’s a voltage spike or a power surge. But usually? It’s just the glass giving up. The constant heating and cooling—that thermal cycling—puts a massive amount of stress on the pinch seals and electrode interfaces. Eventually, they just can’t take it anymore. That’s why we changed how we build our replacement tubes. Stronger Glass, Fewer Headaches Standard tubes are thin. Sure, they move heat quickly, but they’re fragile. Between the vibration of the machine and the heat expansion, they’re basically ticking time bombs. We use a modified quartz mix and a reinforced wall. It’s a bit tougher. It handles those rapid ramp-ups without cracking under pressure. And the best part? They’re a direct fit. You just pop them in. No rewiring, no messing with the panels, no footprint changes. The Honest Trade-off Now, here’s the thing. When you make a wall thicker and stronger, you change the infrared transmission a tiny bit. You might notice a slight shift in how the heat hits your PET preform. But look at the big picture. Would you rather tweak your settings once, or deal with a production halt during your busiest run of the year? A tube that lasts three times longer is worth a few minutes of fine-tuning. Keeping Them Alive Once you get these installed, a couple of small things will make a huge difference. First, check your connections. Make sure they’re seated firmly. A loose wire creates a hotspot, and a hotspot will crack even the toughest quartz. Next, keep your reflectors clean. If they’re covered in grime, the tube has to work twice as hard to hit your process temperature. That burns out the filament way faster than it should. And please, check your cooling fans. These high-density heaters dump a ton of heat into the chassis. If your airflow is blocked, the ends of the tubes will cook themselves regardless of how reinforced they are. Keep the air moving, keep the glass clean, and you’ll spend a lot less time staring at a broken line.
