Stop Waiting on Your Fuselage to Dry
If you’re painting an aircraft fuselage, you know the drill. The surface has to be bone-dry. If even a tiny bit of moisture or solvent stays trapped in that skin, you’re looking at blisters and paint that just peels right off. It’s a nightmare. For those of us pushing out satellite parts or aero frames on a tight schedule, the old convection ovens just don’t cut it. They’re too slow. You have to heat up all the air in the room first, and then wait for the part to catch up. We do things differently. We use shortwave IR systems to hit the material directly. How it actually works Think of it like this: Shortwave IR vibrates at a frequency that aerospace alloys and composite primers just love. Instead of warming up the air around the part, the energy sinks right into the surface layers of the fuselage. It basically pushes the moisture out from the inside, forcing it to the surface where it evaporates almost instantly. We set these systems up with high power density so they don’t take up your entire shop. Because the heat is so focused, you can strip moisture from a huge section of the fuselage in minutes. Not hours. Minutes. The tricky part: Heat management Now, you can’t just blast everything with maximum power. If you dump too much wattage into one spot, you might warp the thin-gauge skins or mess up your composite bonds. That would be a disaster. To keep things safe, we use zoned control arrays. It lets you tune the heat for different areas. You can crank it up for the thick structural ribs and dial it way back for the delicate skin. One more thing—don’t skimp on the cooling for the lamp housings. These things get scorching hot. If your ventilation isn’t strong enough to pull that waste heat away from the electronics, your controllers are going to trip and shut everything down. Why this matters for your floor The biggest win here is the dwell time. You move parts from the cleaning station to the paint booth way faster. It kills the bottleneck in your production line. Plus, it’s a simple swap for those old gas-fired ovens that take an hour just to pre-heat. You just turn it on and get to work.
