Most shops treat infrared lamps like giant hair dryers—they use them to cure a finish or dry out a surface. But if you’re doing aircraft detailing, you can actually use those lamps to rip old coatings right off the skin. The trick is that we aren’t trying to “dry” anything. We’re actually trying to break the paint polymers apart.
Why it actually works
We go with shortwave IR because it doesn’t just sit on the surface. It punches deep into the paint layers and hits that sweet spot where the primer meets the aluminum. When that temperature spikes fast, the bond just gives up. You’ll see the paint start to blister and lift. From there, it’s easy. You just scrape it away. No more endless scrubbing or worrying about gouging the metal.
The gear you actually need
You can’t just grab a cheap bulb and expect this to work. You need real power—specifically, high-wattage quartz halogen tubes. Shortwave emitters are the way to go because they hit your target temp in seconds. But you’ve got to be smart about the setup. You’ll need a controller that lets you dial in the distance perfectly. Too close? You’re risking the airframe. Too far? You’re just paying a huge electric bill for nothing.
The “Gotchas”
This isn’t a “set it and forget it” kind of job. First off, these lamps get incredibly hot at the ends of the tubes. If your housing isn’t built for that kind of heat, you’re going to melt your connectors. Then there’s the aluminum itself. Aluminum drinks up heat fast. If you leave the lamp sitting in one spot for too long, you might warp a panel or mess with the temper of the alloy. That’s a mistake you only make once. The secret is to keep the lamps moving. Use a scanning motion. You want to hit the flash point of the paint and move on before the metal itself gets soaked in heat. It keeps the plane safe and gets the job done way faster.
